The Helmut-Schmidt-Universität/Universität der Bundeswehr Hamburg (HSU/UniBw Hamburg) is one of two universities established by the German Federal Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) to provide academic education to its officers. Founded in 1972 at the initiative of then-Federal Minister of Defence Helmut Schmidt, the university commenced teaching in October 1973.
